Journalism Major

A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED CONVERGENT PROGRAM

Nationally known for our visionary work in next generation convergent journalism, the faculty and facilities at Hastings College’s Gray Center for the Communication Arts offer students myriad opportunites for developing their journalistic skills in a wide scope of specialized content areas. Students are encouraged to gain hands-on experience in all forms of media in their first semester at Hastings College, a rare opportunity in collegiate journalism.

A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH

A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Hastings College requires students to gain experience in all forms of media: video, audio, print, and Web. This critical focus on visual, auditory, and written skill is augmented by our focus on practical, theoretical, and critical literacies--in other words, we strive to create thinking journalists who carefully evaluate the world around them, and use every form of media to tell stories.

A CONTENT-FOCUSED EDUCATION: PUBLIC AFFAIRS, SPORTS, OR CUSTOM FOCUS

While the 39/54-hour program includes the professional and practical elements necessary for success in the field, good journalists do more than just produce content, but also continually strive to master a primary content area. Why? Put simply, reporters carry a responsibility to analyze and interpret the world around them and explain it for audiences. As a result, a B.A. in Journalism requires students to select at least one content emphasis as part of their education.

  • In the Public Affairs Emphasis, students select 15 hours of coursework from areas including public policy, politics, foreign affairs, crime, history, and global issues.
  • In the Sports Reporting Emphasis, students select 15 hours of coursework from areas including sports psychology, history, ethics, sociology, and officiating.
  • In the Custom Emphasis, students choose from a minor or second major with the help of a major field adviser.

A HISTORY OF SUCCESS

Graduates of Hastings College journalism programs have gone on to work with prestigious professional outlets like CBS News, National Public Radio, and Knight-Ridder Newspapers; others have pursued graduate degrees at nationally accredited and Carnegie (top 12) journalism programs.
