Why major in Journalism and Media Arts at Hastings College?

Not certain what area of Journalism you want to focus? Believe you’ll need a multitude of skills as media converge? We’ve got you covered! At Hastings College, you’ll have opportunities to gain experience in producing and managing content in all mediums – print, photography, video, radio, social media and website development and management. We also offer a major in Advertising and Public Relations.

 

Our outstanding professors will push you to consider the convergence of fields within Journalism and theories of communicating through the multitude available media options. Then apply your classroom lessons through assignments and a host of award-winning, student-run media. Experiment. Innovate. Add it to your portfolio.

 

How You’ll Grow

Report, edit and shoot photos for The Collegian, the campus student newspaper. Using new HD and digital equipment for Bronco News Now (video), KFKX (radio) and webstreaming, HC Media Online allows you’ll cover campus activities that keep students, parents and alumni in the know.

 

HC students also provide all media coverage for the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. You and your classmates will create and maintain the tournament website while developing all video, radio, photography, social media and print content. It’s an incredible professional experience! During the 2012 tournament, Sam Gentry ’13 captured video of a last second shot and was featured on ESPN.

 

Many media outlets and businesses in the Hastings area also offer internships and employment, including KHAS-TV, KHAS-Radio, Hastings Tribune, Grand Island Independent, Big Dally’s Deli, I. Design and the Nebraska Crane Trust. Students have also interned with Fox Atomic Digital; 104.3 The Fan in Denver, Colo; Pinpoint Communications, and others.

 

Through the Explorers of Light Cannon Series, Hastings College has hosted lectures by renowned photographers and videographers, including Alex Buono, director of photography for “SNL.” National Geographic legend Sam Abell has helped teach courses during J-Term. Where HC Alumni Go

You’ll find Hastings College alumni enjoying careers all over the country. A sampling of recent graduates includes reporters at WOWT in Omaha, Neb., promotions staff for KDWB in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn., and freelance videographers in Denver, Colo. You’ll also find HC students serving as sportswriters, advertising executives, PR specialists and enrolled in Kent State University’s website architecture program. They’re winning Emmys and other awards for their professional work and hitting the airways and websites in big time media hubs.
