Welcome

The goal of the Mathematics Department is to assist each student in assessing his or her own interests, achievements and potential. Students choosing to major in mathematics may design a program emphasizing pure or applied mathematics, statistics and actuarial science, preparation for teaching, and/or preparation for graduate work. A major or minor in mathematics also provides a valuable complement to a variety of other majors offered at Hastings College.
The computer science major is designed for the student who wishes to develop a broad understanding of computer applications, as well as demonstrate skills in computer programming and systems design. The core computer science courses are supported by one of two concentrations: an information systems emphasis, focusing on the use of computer tools to support decision-making in formal organizations, and a mathematics emphasis, focusing on the use of computing technology to solve engineering and scientific problems. A major or minor in computer science also provides a valuable complement to a variety of other majors offered at Hastings College.
Strengths of the Program
Classes are small with time for personalized teaching and advising. There are no graduate assistants teaching classes.
Hastings College offers a flexible approach to designing a student's program with opportunities for student projects and independent studies.
Partnerships with firms in computer and electronic communications provide funding for classroom and lab facilities, as well as internship and employment opportunities.
The $1.5 million Wilson Center for Mathematics and Computer Science includes two computer labs with Windows stations and two classrooms.
