Debrenee Adkisson

I studied at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, Germany, during the fall semester of my junior year. I took part in German language classes during my semester there, working on such skills as reading and listening comprehension, composition, and conversational practice. I was also able to take a German politics course, which expanded my knowledge of both Germany’s political system and of the European Union. I took classes with students from all corners of the world – students from Japan, Estonia, Spain, Slovakia, France, Hungary, and many other countries. It was a great chance to build lifelong friendships with fun and interesting people.

My time at Münster was one I’ll never forget, not only for the academic experiences I had, but also for the rich culture I was able to experience every day. Visiting the open-air market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, walking on the tree-lined Promenade which encompasses Münster, traveling to other cities such as Leipzig, Cologne, and Nürnberg, and experiencing the night life at the clubs and restaurants are memories I know will stay with me for the rest of my life. Even simple, everyday things like going grocery shopping, watching television in the common room at the dorm, walking to class in the evenings, and staying up late talking with friends were and still are memorable parts of my study abroad experience. I would encourage anyone who is interested to spend a semester or a year abroad. It will help you grow and change in ways you never expected! I loved my semester in Germany, and am looking forward to going back sometime in the future.

Studying Abroad in Leicester, England was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I always dreamed of going to Europe someday, and the study abroad program made it possible. Going out of the country for the first time, not to mention half way across the world, was scary at times, but was well worth it. Everything was a learning experience for me while studying at the University of Leicester.

The school system in England is at a different end of the spectrum compared to colleges in the U.S., but adapting to it and still learning in a different environment was rewarding. The friends I made while in England have connected me with people from around the U.S. and the world. Finally, one of the perks to studying abroad is being able to travel to new and amazing places. This picture is me standing at the top of St. Paul's Cathedral, with a breathtaking view of the London skyline, including the Gherkin building. If the opportunity of studying abroad arises, take a chance and do something amazing.

Kallan PichaStudying abroad is easily the best decision I have made in my life thus far. The knowledge and experience you gain from being immersed in another language, culture, and lifestyle is truly the best way to learn and grow as a person. I spent last semester in Münster, Germany, taking classes in European studies and the German language. I also had the opportunity to travel all around Europe visiting Spain, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands as well. I met people from all over the world and built friendships that will last a lifetime. Making the choice to study overseas is a life-changing experience that you will always thank yourself for. Next semester I am going abroad again to study in Coleraine, Northern Ireland and I can't wait!

Living in Britain gave me an opportunity to experience a world much larger than I had ever known before. Studying my disciplines in a different cultural perspective became an invaluable tool for my education and a real gift for my life. I found new passions for my areas of interest by seeing them through the eyes of other viewpoints. Through my experience abroad I gained immense amounts of independence and confidence, but more than that, a sincere knowledge of my own self and my capacity for navigating life well. And...it was so much fun!!

I can't imagine any way I would have rather spent the last semester than studying abroad. It truly was the adventure of a lifetime: heading off to Belfast, Northern Ireland, meeting people from all over the world, becoming immersed in a unique and interesting culture, and travelling with friends to places I never dreamed I’d have the chance to visit. In a mere six months, I had the chance to travel to nine different countries, study at the internationally renowned Queen's University, and grow as a person through all my incredible experiences. It was amazing being able to attend a much larger institution than Hastings in a city the size of Belfast. I'm very grateful to be able to say that I have now experienced two very different learning environments in two very different, but both incredible, universities. It was an adventure from start to finish, the likes of which I’ll probably never have the opportunity to have again. My only regret was that I couldn’t stay longer and see and learn more.

One of the best things I learned while in Chile (and am still learning my second semester here) wasn´t the language, the culture, the customs, or history, but rather getting to know myself in a way I couldn´t have done if I had remained in my comfort zone. I learned that, at any age, it´s ok to make mistakes and that making them is the best way to learn. I also learned to adapt to new situations, such as an unfamiliar country or an unfamiliar house, and through this I have learned that it´s ok to let things go, especially when you have no control over them. But best of all, I have learned that sometimes confidence comes not from recognition of your hardest efforts, but by making a fool of yourself. Learning Spanish, making new lifelong friends, and understanding a culture completely different yet vaguely similar to my own; now that was just the sideshow."

Studying abroad was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I had traveled in Europe before, but having the opportunity to go to school in such a different environment was an experience I will never forget. I made friends from all over the world and traveled to numerous different countries across Europe, all while I was going to school and getting an insider's view of English culture. Being away for such an extended time can be a bit intimidating at first, but the people I met and the experiences that I had made it all worth it. Immersing myself in a completely different culture gave me so many opportunities that I may never have again in my life, but more than anything, my time abroad and the experiences I had taught me about myself. The trip allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, challenge myself, and develop skills and knowledge I didn’t previously have.
