Do you have an interesting and significant research question to explore? Has a research project in a course sparked an interest to continue the research? Are you interested in presenting your research at a competitive national conference in your discipline or publishing it in a competitive journal in your discipline?
Did you hear about something in a class that you wanted to learn more about? Did you always want to learn about a topic that is not taught at Hastings College? Do you want to position yourself to be more competitive for post-graduate opportunities?
An Excelsior Scholar Grant might be a step toward turning your research project into a vehicle to carry you "ever upward."
We invite grant proposals for research projects. Awards will typically be between $1,500 and $2500; in addition, a maximum of $1,500 will be for out-of-pocket costs and/or travel and conference fees. Requests for awards over $2,500 will be considered by the selection committee with appropriate explanation and justification. A second application for conference travel for both the student and the faculty sponsor will be expected upon acceptance to a conference. The second application should include a budget for both the student and faculty member.
This year’s spring deadline is March 15, 2013 by 5pm. The selection committee will accept drafts and provide general feedback if submitted by March 1, 2013. Please submit proposals to Dr. Liz Frombgen, Associate Academic Dean in Hurley-MacDonald 222A. Applications are accepted once per semester. The ideal application describes a well thought-out proposal with specific details regarding the plan with clear indication of conference or other presentation venue and/or potential journals for publication. Students who apply will need to be working in conjunction with at least one faculty sponsor who oversees the project.
