As a Chemistry or Biochemistry major at Hastings College, you’ll enjoy hands-on experiences and challenging courses taught by professors interested and invested in your long-term success. At the state-of-the-art Morrison-Reeves Science Center, you’ll run your own high-level experiments - and you won’t have to compete with grad students for lab time!

Don’t expect to spend all of your time in the lab, though. Our Chemistry faculty lead by example, and will encourage you to explore interests in other disciplines, including art, sports and theatre, and to appreciate how chemistry shapes and informs other aspects of life.

How You’ll Grow

As you study Chemistry at Hastings College, you’ll assemble a toolbox of skills necessary for success in 21st century laboratories. You’ll conduct research and experiments using some great technology, including our nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, high-performance liquid chromatograph, gas chromatograph and more.

Presenting projects at the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, earning internships and conducting summer research at leading universities will allow you to network and hone professional skills for career advancement. Off-campus study opportunities may take you to the Fermi National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory plus other scientific and cultural locations.

For up to three J-Terms, you can study at leading research universities where you’ll gain additional experiences and further broaden your network. Through these partnerships, you’ll have a small school experience and gain experience at a large research university.

You’ll find recent Hastings College Chemistry majors earning graduate degrees at the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s College of Pharmacy and at Methodist College, conducting research for Novartis, pursuing doctorates at a multitude of universities, serving as technicians for IEH Laboratories and Consulting and teaching at all levels, from elementary to college.
