Welcome to the Chemistry Department

The Morrison-Reeves Science Center

The Chemistry Department offers a sequence of courses designed to prepare students to meet entrance requirements to graduate schools in Chemistry and to the many related professional programs.

In addition, the course offerings serve as support courses for the biology, physics, pre-engineering, and other science majors.

The chemistry department is housed in the new state-of-the-art Morrison-Reeves Science Center. This LEED certified facility opened in the fall of 2009 and provides a new and modern learning environment designed to promote student and faculty interaction.

The chemistry labs offer first-hand experience with impressive equipment. Students will learn to use the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, GC-MS, and fourier transform infrared spectrometer, not by just watching, but by running their own samples. Students also take part in research projects using high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and a variety of electroanalytic systems.

Chemistry Student

Class sizes are small (never more than 40) and all classes and labs are taught by professors, not by a graduate student.

Students have the opportunity to present projects at the Nebraska Academy of sciences and do internships and summer research at leading universities. Interdisciplinary opportunities are available between the Chemistry Department and other departments on campus.

A January term course is also offered to research at leading universities. This allows our students to take classes in a small environment, yet have access to the cutting edge research facilities offered at large research institutions.
