Welcome to the Biology Department!

The Biology major at Hastings College offers a curriculum designed to prepare students for entrance into graduate study, secondary teaching and the health professions. With selected courses in biology chemistry, mathematics, and physics, students will meet pre-professional requirements in medicine, dentistry, medical technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, veterinary medicine, physician's assistant programs and many other health professions. The opportunity for interdisciplinary study exists between the Department of Biology and other departments for those students interested in the personalized curricular program.
Strengths of the Program
The smaller classes at Hastings College offer a great advantage over large universities in helping students prepare for advanced schooling. Freshman biology majors will have an average class size of 30-35 students. Sophomores will have 25-30 students and upperclassmen will attend classes of about 8-12 students.
Hastings College was one of the first institutions to make the internship part of its Biology curriculum. Our students have interned with the Henry Doorly Zoo, Ak-Sar-Ben Aquarium at Schramm State Park in Omaha, NE, Federal Fish & Wildlife Service and numerous health clinics here and abroad.
Hastings College's January interim period provides maximum opportunity for creative imagination for areas of study and methods of instruction not always possible in the longer 14-week semesters. Biology chairman Dr. Dallas Wilhelm offers a unique opportunity for students to travel the world during J-Term.
