Babcock Hall

Built in 1978, Babcock is a three-story residence hall for women – most of whom are very fun, very lively and very active on campus. Rooms in Babcock are a little larger than other dorm rooms on campus. Residents participate in sports, sororities, and many other on-campus activities.

“I love living in Babcock because it is so much fun and you always have someone to hang out with. Having a roommate is fun because you can always have someone to talk to and someone to do something with. Meeting all of the new people when you first get here is the best part and if you are bored you just have to go down the hall and find someone to bother! There is never a dull moment and no matter what you do you will never be bored!

One day a couple of the girls on the softball team and I were bored and wanted to find something fun to do. We decided to head to Wal-Mart to get a whiffle ball kit. We ended up playing a game of whiffle ball in the hallway of Babcock, and we were just having so much fun that lots of girls joined us and it was a great time!”

Meet the Residence Director at Babcock: Nicole (Nikki) Schulte

Nikki SchulteHistory with Hastings College:

I moved into Taylor Hall when I was 12 because my mom took over as their hall director. After graduation from Hastings High School in 2002, I attended Hastings College for 2 years. I came back to school the spring of 2010 and graduated with my degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in K-12 Special Education in May 2012. This is my second year working as a hall director.

How would you describe your dorm and its residents?

Most of our residents are very involved with the campus, especially in sports. They are a very fun and social group of ladies.

What is your favorite thing about HC?

I love the small campus feel. It doesn't take long to get to know students and staff. Being involved is easy to do here. There is always some sort of college event going on.

What is your favorite thing to do in Hastings?

When it's nice out, my daughter and I love to go to Heartwell Park to feed the ducks. I also like our downtown. There are several cute shops and good places to get a bite to eat.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I enjoy reading, watching basketball, and traveling.

What is your favorite movie of all-time?

Although it may be cheesy, I have loved “Dirty Dancing” since I was a little girl.

When you have had roommates, what quality or trait did you most appreciate?

I think it's easiest to live with someone who you have similar interests with. I am pretty laid back, so I have always gotten along best with people who don't get stressed over things like having a messy room.

If you could have any superpower as a residence director, what would it be?

I'd love to have a built in lie-detector...I want to think that I'm never being told something that isn't true, although I'm sure it happens. Being able to know for sure would help me sleep better at night!

People would be surprised to know that…

During my six years away from Hastings, I lived in Jacksonville, FL, where I worked for a veterinary oncologist. And I have an obsession with ranch dressing.
