"We honor these distinguished professors for upholding and guiding the aspirations of their students, advancing knowledge, and elevating and dignifying the profession of teaching. In recognizing their commitment and excellence, their contributions and their demonstrated passion, we support the centrality of teaching on campus and recognize its importance to the future of our country."
- Lee S. Shulman, president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, in announcing the 2005 state and national Professors of the Year
Over the past ten years, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) have named three Hastings College faculty members Nebraska Professor of the Year:
- 2005 – Dr. Daniel Deffenbaugh, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy
- 2002 – Dr. James Wiest, Professor of Sociology and Department Chair
- 1995 – Mr. Roger Doerr, Professor of Business Administration and Economics
The Professors of the Year Program recognizes outstanding undergraduate teaching and service to students. One professor from each state is selected as Professor of the Year, and four professors receive national honors in the categories of baccalaureate colleges, community colleges, doctoral and research universities, and master’s universities and colleges. Carnegie and CASE base their evaluation of candidates on four primary criteria: impact on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching; service to undergraduate students, institution, community and profession; and support from colleagues and students. State and national winners are announced at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
John Lippincott, president of CASE, said the national and state winners embody what is best in undergraduate education. "It is clear that for our state and national Professors of the Year, teaching is a calling, not merely a job," he said. "Through their remarkable efforts inside and outside of the classroom, these professors have profoundly changed the lives of their students, providing them with a solid foundation upon which to build the rest of their lives."
