Residence Halls and Campus Living
Hastings College believes traditional-aged,
college freshmen, sophomores and juniors benefit by living
in an on-campus, residential environment. To this end, the
college maintains five residence halls, nine campus academic
honors houses and campus apartments (for juniors and seniors).
The College firmly believes that nearly as much growth and
development takes place through a campus residential community
experience as in the classroom. Opportunities exist for leadership,
involvement, and community life exist in an on-campus environment
that are not available in off-campus housing. Upperclass students
become role models for younger students and relationships
evolve into deep and long-lasting friendships.
The residence halls at Hastings College
are under the supervision of competent Resident Directors
who are directly responsible to the Deans of Students. Student
leaders are hired as Resident Assistants who are responsible
to the Resident Director. Both R.D. and R.A. aid in creating
and maintaining in the residence halls a living environment
in which the greatest educational, social, and cultural opportunities
for the student will be realized.
Residential Policy
The Hastings College Residential Policy
reflects a commitment to personal growth through on-campus
residency and serves to uphold the overall mission of the
college.
All students, including Hastings area students,
are required to house and board on campus unless they:
- reside with their mother, father, sister or brother within
45 miles of the campus ;
- are married or are a single parent;
- are 23 or older by the first day of classes in the school
year under consideration;
- are a part-time student.
Written documentation, signed and notarized
by a parent or legal guardian if student is under 23, must
be provided to the Deans of Students Office for any of the
four exceptions. Additional exceptions may be made for senior
students who petition the Deans of Students office prior to
April 1 of the previous school year. Students who violate
this policy and move off campus without Deans of Students
authorization will be charged for full board and room. Any
student who receives authorization from the Deans of Students
because of special circumstances to move off campus
after having been in campus housing may be assessed a penalty
of $200 for residence halls and houses, and $400 for apartments.
When rooms are not available in the residence
halls, campus houses or apartments, the Deans of Students
will assist in obtaining housing for out-of-town students.
When vacancies exist in the residence halls, houses or apartments,
students are not likely to be granted permission to live off
campus.
The College has no housing facilities for
married students. However, the Deans of Students does maintain
a card file to assist married and other upper-class students
in locating housing near the campus.
The Deans of Students make assignments to
campus housing. When demand for campus housing exceeds available
space, priority will be given to those students with the earliest
date of matriculation at Hastings College. Single rooms are
only available as space allows at additional cost to the student.
Campus Housing Regulations
Community life in campus residential facilities
requires basic regulations necessary to insure a healthy and
comfortable living environment. In addition to these basic
regulations, each residence hall has its own constitution
and is governed by the Residence Hall Council which is part
of the Hastings College judicial system. The campus apartments
have community rules and are governed by a Village Board,
also part of the judicial system. Complete campus housing
policies and regulations are available in the Student Handbook/Planner
and are available on the Hasting College website.
Open House Policy in Residence Halls
and Houses
The hours of open house in the residence
halls and campus houses are 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 midnight
on Sunday through Thursday of each week that school is in
session. Weekend hours are extended in the residence halls
and campus houses are 10:00 a.m. Friday morning until 2:00
a.m. Saturday morning, and 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning until
2:00 a.m. Sunday morning. No guests of the opposite sex
are allowed in the residence halls and campus houses from
midnight until 10:00 a.m. on Monday through Friday, or from
2:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Saturday or Sunday.
Alcohol Policy
Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all
buildings on the main campus of the college including residence
halls and campus houses. Alcoholic beverages are allowed in
the Hastings College apartments if students are of legal drinking
age. Students in the apartments are expected to exercise mature
judgment and social responsibility when making decisions regarding
the use of alcoholic beverages.
Vacation Housing Policy for Residence
Halls and Houses
Room and board charges for the residence
halls and houses cover the entire academic year with the exceptions
of Thanksgiving Vacation, Christmas Vacation, and Spring Break.
Residence halls and houses are closed during these three vacations
and there is no food service provided. Since Resident Directors
are not on duty and heating/cooling is minimal, there will
be no exceptions to this policy. International students will
be housed with off-campus host families in Hastings; students
needing to stay for athletics or college sponsored activities
will need to arrange housing with off-campus team or activity
members. All other students should plan to go home or make
other arrangements with off-campus students well ahead of
these breaks to avoid last minute problems.
The campus apartments are open year-round
for students. Students may sign a ten-month contract or a
twelve-month contract.
Early Arrivals
All early arrivals must be cleared through
the Deans of Students. Only under special circumstances will
residents be allowed to move into campus housing early.
Personal Property
The College does not insure residents of
College housing for personal property damage or loss. Students
should add a rider to their homeowners policy or take
out a room insurance policy to cover their personal property.
Residence Hall Dues
Each residence hall establishes a required
residence hall fee to help cover the cost of the programming
and the social activities of the hall. The amount of the fee
is left to the discretion of each residence hall.
