Student Personnel Services
One of the advantages of a small liberal
arts college is the opportunity for close contact between
students and the faculty and administration. Recognizing the
importance of counseling and guidance in the academic endeavor,
the College has a staff of trained professionals who provide
a comprehensive student development program. This program
provides for the orientation of all new students, assistance
in personal and college adjustment, assistance with career
and life decisions, support in improving study skills, and
assistance and referrals for students with special problems.
Academic Advisor
Program
Each new student is assigned an advocate
who assists in planning the student's course of study and
provides assistance with general college and future planning.
Student Services staff work with students and their advocates
in connection with registration, grades, academic emphasis,
vocational objectives, spiritual needs, and personal concerns.
In addition, students have the privilege of conferring with
other members of the faculty, all of whom serve as student
advisors.
Career Services
Career Services provides assistance and
guidance to students seeking information about careers, summer
jobs, internships, and full-time employment. A variety of
resources and services are offered to students including:
career counseling and assessment, a career resource library;
part-time, summer and full-time vacancy listings; career seminars;
resume, interview and job search preparation; resume referral;
campus interviews and an interviewing consortium. Mock interviews
are available by appointment. Students are encouraged to initiate
contact with this office early on in their college years.
Health and Insurance
Services
The Charles L. Stone Health Center provides
health services under the direction of registered nurses.
The College nurses are under the supervision of consulting
physicians, covering broad fields of medical practice. The
services of College nurses are available during posted hours
of the day and for emergency situations at other times for
students registered for four or more hours. In case of illness
in which advanced medical services are required, the nurses
will assist students in obtaining appropriate care. The Hastings
College Counseling Services are located in the Health Center.
Licensed Mental Health Practitioners are available full-time
for mental health counseling, the Chaplain is available for
spiritual counseling, and a part-time minority counselor is
also on staff. Appointments may be made through the Health
Center, or students may access services by dropping by anytime
the counselors are available. Information and other resources
are also available through the Health Center.
A portion of the General Fee assessed by
the Business Office covers all Health Center costs. Common
remedies and medications recommended by consulting physicians
and administered by college nurses may be included. The College
can assume no share of the charges made by physicians, dentists,
or other specialists; or for treatment or medications other
than those administered or dispensed in the College Health
Center. The College assumes no share of costs incurred while
the student is under treatment in any hospital or facility
other than the College Health Center.
Many college students, independently or
through their families, carry health insurance policies. Hastings
College urges students to subscribe to a family or individual
health insurance plan, the cost of which must be borne by
the student. An optional limited health insurance plan is
available through the Business Office for an additional fee.
Hastings College maintains student accident
policies for all full-time students during the regular school
year. In addition, the athletic department provides catastrophic
insurance coverage on all students participating in intercollegiate
athletics. Specific information regarding these policies is
available in the Business Office. S.H.A.C. (Student Health
Advisory Council) is a student organization designed to link
the health concerns of students with the college administration.
PHIVE-O (Peer HIV Education Organization), CARE (College Acquaintance
Rape Educators), BACCHUS and GAMMA (groups promoting alcohol
and other drug awareness and education), and The Alliance
are supervised from the Health Center. Contact the Director
of the Health Center to join any of these groups, operating
under the Hastings College Peer Umbrella Network, (P.U.N.).
The Learning
Center
The Learning Center is designed to provide
support services for students at Hastings College who have
academic concerns. Established in 1974, in cooperation with
the Nebraska Educational Television Council for Higher Education
(NETCHE), the Center is intended to assist students in reading,
writing, and study skills. The Center is staffed by a qualified
professional and student assistants who provide academic counseling,
tutorial assistance in a wide variety of course work, and
help with learning skills. The Center also provides a course
in learning strategies emphasizing skills and techniques for
personal and academic success in college and throughout life.
Services for Students
with Disabilities
Hastings College will attempt to make appropriate
and reasonable academic adjustments to accommodate the needs
of students with disabilities in accordance with the requirements
of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Public Law
#93-112) and the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities
Act of 1990 (Public Law #101-336).
Students who believe they have a disability
that will require academic adjustments or housing accommodations
should contact the Learning Center or the Deans of Students
Office at Hastings College.
